Ceiling fan direction helps lower the cost of heating and cooling

One of the questions that gets asked time and time again, is how does a ceiling fan work in terms of direction. Most ceiling fans can operate in both the clockwise direction and counter-clockwise. In the counter clockwise direction, your fan will blow air straight down during the summer months. As the weather gets hotter, the speed on the fan can be increased in order to move more and more air. As a ceiling fan helps to move cool air, it becomes less and less necessary to run the air conditioning 24/7. This is not a well known fact, and many people continue to run the ceiling fan and the air conditioning constantly on the highest setting, which is not always required. In order to cut down on energy cost, try these energy saving tips in both the summer time and winter time.

In the winter time, a Hunter ceiling fan should be run at a low speed in the opposite direction – clockwise. In the clockwise direction, a ceiling fan will help to move warm air around. It’s not required to run the fan at anything higher than a low speed, as the warm air will get moved around just fine on the lower speeds settings.

How do I adjust the direction of my ceiling fan?

Generally, changing direction of the fan is as simple as pressing a button. Typically there will be a button on your remote that will change the direction of the fan. If you have a wall control for your fan instead, there’s usually a button on the wall remote. If your fan does not have such a button, there may be a pullchain or a button on the ceiling fan housing itself that allows for the fan to change direction.
